신라젠 드디어 코로나19(우한바이러스) 백신 개발에 총성을 울리다.

신라젠은 26일 부산시 해운대구 우동에 있는 부산디자인센터에서 제14기 정기주주총회를 열고 COVID-19 백신 개발 계획을 알렸다.

신라젠은 코로나19 백신 개발을 위해 지난 25일 질병관리본부에서 코로나19 핵산(유전정보가 들어있는 물질)을 분양받아 연구에 닻을 올렸다.

신라젠은 백시니아 바이러스 유전자 재조합을 통해 코로나19 백신을 개발한다는 계획이다. 앞서 신라젠은 백시니아 바이러스 유전자 재조합 기술을 활용해 항암제를 개발을 진행한 바 있다.

백시니아 바이러스는 이미 천연두를 박멸시킨 바이러스로, 200년 동안 사람들에게 접종될 만큼 안전성과 유효성이 입증된 바이러스이다.

백시니아 바이러스는 '와이어스', '웨스턴리저브', '코펜하겐', '리스트', '앙카라' 등 여러 종류의 균주가 있는데, 신라젠은 이 중 백신으로 가장 적합한 균주를 선별할 예정이다. 이후 항원성과 안전성을 극대화할 수 있는 유전자 재조합을 통해 코로나19 백신을 만들 계획을 세우고있으며 이러한 연구환경에 따라 신라젠 관계자는 "백시니아 바이러스를 이용해 백신을 만들 경우 항체가 더 잘 생기고, 돌연변이 바이러스에도 효과가 있는 백신을 개발할 수 있다"며 "백시니아 바이러스 관련 생산 노하우를 보유하고 있는 만큼 다른 회사들보다 개발 속도가 빠를 것"이라고 주주총회에서 설명했다. .

또 신라젠은 지난 25일(한국시간) 미국암학회(AACR)에서 신장암 대상 면역항암제 '리브타요'와 자체 개발한 항암 바이러스 '펙사벡' 병용임상 연구 초록이 채택됐다고 발표했고 리브타요는 미국 바이오기업 리제네론이 개발한 면역항암제이다.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).[8] The disease was first identified in 2019 in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei, China, and has since spread globally, resulting in the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic.[9][10] Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Muscle pain, sputum production, diarrhea, and sore throat are less common.[5][11][12][13] While the majority of cases result in mild symptoms,[14] some progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure.[9][15] As of 25 March 2020, the rate of deaths per number of diagnosed cases is 4.5 percent; however, it ranges from 0.2 percent to 15 percent, according to age group and other health problems.[7]

The virus is typically spread during close contact and via respiratory droplets produced when people cough or sneeze.[16][17] Respiratory droplets may be produced during breathing but it is not considered airborne.[16] It may also spread when one touches a contaminated surface and then their face.[16][17] It is most contagious when people are symptomatic, although spread may be possible before symptoms appear.[17] The virus can live on surfaces up to 72 hours.[18] Time from exposure to onset of symptoms is generally between two and fourteen days, with an average of five days.[19][20] The standard method of diagnosis is by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) from a nasopharyngeal swab. The infection can also be diagnosed from a combination of symptoms, risk factors and a chest CT scan showing features of pneumonia.[21][22]

Recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, social distancing (maintaining physical distance from others, especially from those with symptoms), covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or inner elbow, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face.[23][24] The use of masks is recommended by some national health authorities for those who suspect they have the virus and their caregivers, but not for the general public, although simple cloth masks may be used by those who desire them.[25][26] There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Management involves treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures.[27],

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 30 January 2020[28][29] and a pandemic on 11 March 2020.[10] Local transmission of the disease has been recorded in many countries across all six WHO regions.[30]
